Package Design

In the wide world of design, certain mediums and applications tend to get more attention than others. Web design is certainly a forerunner in this field, as are the disciplines of graphic design, fashion design, and interior design. In fact, these disciplines are showered with notice and reverence, often having their own departments at design universities, and warranting specialty magazines and other publications. But this group of popular design areas may soon be joined by an area that, while certainly not new, has been gaining momentum in recent years. Package design is becoming a hot topic among the visually and artistically inclined, and especially among designers who are looking for a new application for their graphics and images. This process of gaining popularity for critical process components has been seen before; many weren’t too thrilled about the obligatory incorporation of SEO into modern websites, but today search engine optimization comprises one of the most successful and highly sough areas online. But what are the principal considerations in quality package design?

Web designers and other creative professionals are likely to recognize some elements of their craft in the tenets of package design, along with some new ideas that challenge the way a designer thinks about a finished product. One area in which package design takes on new attributes for traditional designers is in protection. For all but the most adventurous artistic talents, designers have likely not come across the need to protect something with their artwork. But this is necessary in package design, where the difference between a beautiful container that crushes on slight impact and a homely design that can withstand even the most enthusiastic of stomping can mean the difference between a successful and a canceled contract.

The display of information is another essential component of quality package design. In a way similar to posters and some forms of advertisements, packages must convey information about the product inside to potential customers, and pull this off with style and creativity. Unlike posters and other traditional media, however, packages are often required to have any number of special labels and insignia, from hazardous material signs to nutrition information, and the incorporation of these elements can sometimes be tricky.

Convenience is key for successful packaging. An attractive exterior may initially draw a customer towards a product, but if it’s found that accessing the product inside is a hassle because of the packaging, significant value can be lost for the product owner. In a similar fashion, portion control is sometimes necessary to provide quality packaging, especially when it comes to food and other consumable items. From bubble-blisters for pills and other small items to special reservoirs or individually-wrapped pieces, the separation of the product into parts is often part of putting together a package. By considering these basic elements and using the results as a foundation for creative inclination, designers can achieve package designs that are both visually and functionally appealing.
