Backup Computer Files before Traveling

Traveling with a laptop computer, whether for business or pleasure, put the data stored on that computer at greatly increased risk of loss from a variety of reasons. Before taking any trip with a laptop computer, it is wise to make updated backup copies of any important files and data stored on the computer’s hard drive.

One of the risks of travelling with a computer is the risk of theft. Laptop computers are highly sought after by grab and run thieves because they have a high value, but are quite small and easy to carry away. They are also highly marketable for the thief. When travelling, airport security requires that laptops be removed from bags and sent through the x-ray scanner separately from other items. While this may help TSA officials make sure the laptop is really a laptop, it also lets any potential thieves know that you are carrying a laptop in your bag. From that point onward, they may be targeting your bag, waiting for you to set it down beside your seat as you wait at the terminal for your plane to begin loading.

Aside from theft, Laptops can be damaged by an impact or jolt while they are running. If you are using your laptop on the plane or in the terminal, it is at a higher risk of being dropped or bumped hard enough to cause a head crash. A head crash is caused by the scanning head striking the spinning disk. The contact scrapes the magnetic coating of the disk destroying any data in the damaged areas. Because the disk is typically spinning at very high speeds, a substantial portion of the disk can be damaged with even momentary contact.

When the laptop is turned off, the scanning head is secured parked and head crash is no longer a serious risk. However, if the laptop is dropped on a solid surface such as the tile floor of the airport building, serious damage can still occur to the computer and the hard drive. Taking the computer out of the computer bag either to use it, or for TSA scanning exposes it to the risk of being dropped and damaged.

With all these extra risks being incurred by the laptop, newly updated backup copies of important files can at least save your important data if not the computer itself. Without those backup copies, you might still be able to recover the files from a damaged computer or hard drive with the help of a good data recovery service. If the computer is lost or stolen, however, there isn’t a data recovery company in the world that can restore your files if you haven’t made duplicate copies.
